LONGEVITY

Expected Service Life

The lifespan of any Buoyancy Control Device (BCD) depends on usage, maintenance, storage conditions, and environmental exposure. High-quality materials and proper care can significantly extend the service life of your equipment.

EnvironmentExpected Service LifeWhy
Indoor Storage10–15+ yearsStored in a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight and chemicals. Material remains flexible, seams experience minimal stress, and UV degradation is virtually eliminated.
Recreational Diving8–12 yearsUsed regularly but rinsed with fresh water after each dive, dried thoroughly, and stored correctly. Annual inspections and replacement of worn components help maintain performance and reliability.
Heavy Commercial Use5–8 yearsDaily or frequent diving, repeated inflation and deflation cycles, constant exposure to salt water, UV radiation, boat decks, and transport wear increase material fatigue and accelerate normal ageing.
Poor UV Protection3–6 yearsProlonged exposure to direct sunlight, high temperatures, and improper storage can cause premature ageing. UV radiation gradually hardens PVC-based materials, reducing flexibility and shortening service life.

Factors That Extend the Life of Your BCD

Fresh Water Rinse After Every Dive

Salt crystals left inside or outside the BCD can accelerate wear on valves, inflators, dump valves, and metal hardware.

Recommended: Thoroughly rinse the exterior and partially fill the bladder with fresh water, shake gently, drain completely, then allow it to dry.

Dry Before Storage

Moisture trapped inside the bladder can encourage mould and unpleasant odours while increasing the likelihood of internal contamination.

Recommended: Dry the BCD completely before storing it.

Avoid Direct Sunlight

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is one of the biggest contributors to material ageing. Extended exposure can cause colour fading, material hardening, reduced flexibility, and premature surface cracking.

Recommended: Store in a cool, shaded environment whenever possible.

Avoid Excessive Heat

High temperatures can reduce the flexibility of PVC-based materials and place additional stress on glued or welded seams. Avoid storing your BCD in the boot of a hot vehicle, on a boat deck for extended periods, or near heaters and heat sources.

Inflate Slightly During Storage

Storing the bladder with a small amount of air inside helps prevent the internal surfaces from sticking together and allows moisture to evaporate more effectively.

Protect Stainless Steel Components

Although 316 stainless steel offers excellent corrosion resistance, regular rinsing removes salt deposits and helps maintain the appearance and function of buckles, D-rings, and backplates.

Annual Inspection

Inspect the following at least once a year: inflator operation, dump valves, OPV (Over Pressure Valve), webbing, buckles, D-rings, bolts and fasteners, seams and fabric condition. Early detection of wear can prevent unexpected failures.

Built for Long-Term Reliability

A well-maintained technical BCD is a long-term investment. Proper cleaning, careful storage, and regular inspection can significantly extend its operational life while ensuring dependable performance dive after dive.

The Pelagus Difference

Pelagus 4 Life systems are engineered with premium materials selected for demanding diving environments. Combined with proper care and routine maintenance, they are designed to provide years of reliable performance for recreational and technical divers alike.
